I’ve been working on the bedroom curtains for a few days now. I didn’t fully focus on this project. I got distracted by other things like designing a striped pillow fabric, picking up my matted and framed chapel picture for the foyer and trying to figure out how to hang it, dealing with the leak in the roof, and coordinating with my contractor to have the cracked skylight in the sun tunnel replaced, among other things.
But in between all these other things, I worked on the bedroom curtains. I thought I might be able to finish them all yesterday, but once I got the first piece hung up so I could pin the hem, I had doubts about my decision on the trim. I had two options: wrap the edge of the panel so that it isn’t quite as bold and wide and only brings out a hint of orange, or use the border so that the entire width of the orange border is visible.
I think I chose the wrong thing. This is what the panel looks like with the trim wrapped around the edge. This panel is finished except for the hem.
Here’s the thing. I like the width of the trim when it wraps around the edge. What I don’t like is that the design loses its impact when folded in half.
It would be a hassle to change course now, but there’s nothing other than my desire to finish these as quickly as possible that’s stopping me from doing it again if I need to. I still haven’t added the pleats in some panels. So on second thought, now is the time to do it. Although the edge is sewn on, it can be easily removed, ironed and reused.
This is what it would look like if the entire width of the trim was visible. And of course, given my love for (and actual need for) symmetry, I think I should have gone in that direction. Hindsight is 20/20, right?
I wish it was narrower, but there’s nothing I can do about it at this point. Either I leave it folded at the edge, then (to me) the amount of orange is perfectly visible, but the design is cut in half, which looks incomplete to me. Or I use full width, which is much bolder, but the design is complete, which is much easier on the eye and gives me the symmetry I love.
Not using the fairing is not an option. I hung the fabric on the rod without the trim for a few days to see if I liked it, but I didn’t. It’s way too plain and blah. In order for me to be happy with them, the curtains need a trim and some orange. I’m just (still) torn on how to use it, especially now that I’ve actually finished a panel (down to the trim) and hung it in the room. Let me know your thoughts, but for now I think I need to revise it again. While I want this (and the entire room) done as quickly as possible, I also want it done right.
