This smart lamp tracks your sleep without touching you

Smart home applications focus on convenience and discovering the limits of what a home monitoring system can do. But at a time when technology is starting to do everything, where is the human being at the center? The company Sleepal aims to address exactly that and focuses on wellness by focusing on how people sleep in combination with their environment.

Sleepal is a consumer brand of XSmart Technology, a company founded in 2022 by Dian Fan, a master’s graduate from Tsinghua University. Fan is also a founding employee, general manager of IoT platform department and head of cloud services at Xiaomi.

The new technology is a fusion of artificial intelligence and sensor technology, expanding sleep monitoring capabilities and potentially the way users sleep. The Sleepal AI lamp is at the intersection of new technologies, and with its development the Sleepal company aims to deliver a product that not only tracks your sleeping habits, but also takes into account your surroundings. With a touchless, atmospheric design, they hope to usher in a new era of health-focused smart home integration.

The rise of non-invasive sleep technology in the environment

With traditional wearables, consumers may feel uncomfortable due to the design or wearable requirements of the device. Limited battery life results in the need to continually recharge the battery and may raise concerns about battery life during use. This type of device may also experience lower acceptance among sensitive or elderly users.

Devices like the Sleepal® AI Lamp eliminate the need for skin contact or wearable technology and provide full functionality in a passive, contactless format. Discomfort, charging and sensitivity can become obsolete and improve functionality for users.

Multimodal sensing using radar, thermal, acoustic, humidity, brightness and environmental stimuli enables holistic, high-precision sleep tracking.

Beyond sleep tracking: Personalized and AI-driven

To build the Sleepal Lamp, the company combined AI models trained over two years on proprietary clinical sleep datasets with real-time sensor inputs to create accurate, personalized sleep reports and actionable suggestions for improved sleep quality.

The Sleepal AI lamp includes sleep position guidance, breathing pattern analysis and adaptive environmental control (light/sound), making it a calming and holistic sleep system.

Smart homes meet preventive health

By integrating the Sleepal AI Lamp into smart homes, Sleepal aims to transform bedrooms into intelligent wellness zones. The idea is based on the company’s commitment to helping users understand how to sleep better. Their AI lamp is designed so that wellness doesn’t compete for attention with all the other highly active electronics people have in their homes these days.

Adaptive light, sound and device behavior are based on the customer’s sleep stages and are intended to promote better rest and better adjustment of circadian rhythms. Sleepal positions its intelligent sleep technology as a key component of consumer-focused healthcare.

Design and privacy

The Sleepal sleeping system is designed to blend into the interior design while prioritizing privacy. The lamp has no camera and does not record videos, only heat patterns and radar. Sensor data is processed locally on the device, but some sleep functions are measured using AI to provide insights into deep sleep and provide actionable suggestions for improved sleep quality. Included in the device’s design is a physical privacy button that isolates circuit-level sensors, promising 100% privacy.

The visual design of the Sleepal AI Lamp was created in collaboration with VISTART Design, the premium design studio founded by renowned, award-winning designer Ningning Li. The focus is on lifestyle appeal and an unobtrusive form factor.

Trends and applications in the digital health market

The aging population and increasing awareness of the impact of sleep on mental and physical health are creating a demand for accessible home health solutions. Sleepal hopes to bridge the gap with its AI lamp sleep system.

The company says its product is ideal for use in elder care, monitoring older patients who may require more care at night, as well as sleep apnea and other sleep disorder symptoms. Finally, the device is designed to manage stress with white noise or soothing soundscapes, a low-level blue light interface that naturally induces a calmer state of mind, and other exciting features on the roadmap designed to promote stress-free and optimized sleep.

Sleepal hopes to be a pioneer in integrating sleep health into smart homes in the future.
