Volkswagen has priced two new plug-in hybrid SUVs (PHEVs) for the Australian market, and they’re significantly cheaper than the only other PHEV model sold down under.
The Volkswagen Tiguan eHybrid The price range is from $64,590 before on-road costswhile the Tayron eHybrid The price range is from $62,390 before travel – less than half the price of the Touareg R large performance SUV, which was previously the brand’s only PHEV in Australia.
Order books for the new PHEV SUVs will open shortly ahead of their arrival in Australian showrooms in the second quarter (April to June) of 2026. Both are offered in the 150TSI eHybrid Elegance and 200TSI eHybrid R-Line versions.

They combine a 1.5-litre TSI four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor, resulting in a total system output of 150kW in the 150TSI and – you guessed it – 200kW in the 200TSI.
The PHEVs use a 19.7 kWh battery and offer an all-electric range of 113-117 km, depending on the variant. The battery can be charged with alternating current up to 11 kW and with direct current up to 40 kW.
Volkswagen claims combined cycle fuel consumption of between 1.6 and 1.8 l/100 km.
At $64,590 before on-road costs, the base Tiguan 150TSI eHybrid Elegance is $3,000 more expensive than the petrol Tiguan 150TSI Elegance, albeit without all-wheel drive.
The Tiguan 200TSI eHybrid R-Line costs $74,550 before on-road costs, which is $3,000 more than the existing Tiguan flagship, the all-wheel-drive 195TSI R-Line.
While a full spec list has not yet been released, Volkswagen has confirmed the following options for the Tiguan:
- Metallic paint: $800
- Premium metallic paint: $1100
- Panoramic sunroof: $2100
- Black Style Package: $1500 (R-Line only)
The Tayron is a slightly larger version of the Tiguan that is also available with a third row of seats. However, the Tayron eHybrid is only offered as a five-seater, although it has 705 liters of cargo space – compared to 490 liters in the Tiguan.
The 150TSI eHybrid Elegance costs $62,390 before on-road launch, which is $2,000 more than the 150TSI Elegance, although without third row seats or all-wheel drive.
The flagship 200TSI eHybrid R-Line is priced at $76,550 before on-road launch, $2,000 more than the existing Tayron 195TSI R-Line flagship.
The Tayron has the same options and option prices as the Tiguan, although the Tayron 150TSI eHybrid Elegance is also available with a Sound & Vision package for an additional $4,200 – although Volkswagen Australia has not yet confirmed what is included.
The petrol-powered Tayron 150TSI Elegance includes a head-up display, a Harman Kardon sound system and HD Matrix LED headlights.
Both the Tiguan and the Tayron in the petrol-powered 150TSI Elegance are equipped with leather upholstery as standard. heated, ventilated and massaging front seats; a 15-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and satellite navigation; a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster; a wireless phone charger; semi-autonomous parking assistant; and a power liftgate, as well as a range of active safety and driver assistance features.
Competitors for the Tiguan and Tayron eHybrids will include everything from the BYD Sealion 6 and Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV to the Mazda CX-60 and the upcoming Skoda Kodiaq PHEVs.
