Electric cars may not sell as well as electric SUVs, but this Mazda 6e will continue to shake up the market.
Mazda Australia has confirmed pricing for the new Mazda 6e, a mid-size liftback designed and built by the Changan Mazda joint venture in China, before deliveries begin in July 2026.
The Mazda 6e was predicted to have a starting price of under $55,000, but the Japanese brand has now confirmed that it will drop to under $50,000 by the time it reaches production.

The price range starts at $49,990 before on-road costs for the base GT, which is below the base Premium RWD version of the Tesla Model 3, which leads sales in the segment. The entry-level Tesla costs $54,900 before on-road launch.
The Mazda 6e GT also outperforms the MG IM5 Premium ($60,990 auto) and rivals the Kia EV4 Air. However, it is more expensive than the BYD Seal Dynamic ($46,990 plus on-road).
All Mazda 6e liftbacks available in the Australian market use a 190kW/290Nm rear-mounted electric motor and a 78kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, providing an electric range of 560km on the WLTP cycle and an energy consumption of 15.9kWh/100km.
According to Mazda, the new electric vehicle can be charged from 30 to 80 percent in just 15 minutes using a DC fast charger.
In previous tests of the Mazda 6e Daily Sparkz recorded a 0-100 km/h time of 7.35 seconds.
Standard features include a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a 14.6-inch infotainment touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 14-speaker Sony sound system, a head-up display and heated and ventilated front seats.
A black interior is standard, although the Warm Beige colorway is a $1,000 option.
Priced at $52,990 before release, the Atenza features tan leather and synthetic suede seat trim with quilted stitching, tan synthetic suede trim on the dashboard and doors, and a two-tone black and leather steering wheel.
The first 300 customers to pre-order a Mazda 6e GT will receive a free upgrade to the top Atenza trim.
The Mazda 6e is the Japanese brand’s first model in Australia to feature a Bluetooth key, and its Mazda 6e app allows remote adjustment of air conditioning, windows and locks, among other features.
Measuring 4921mm long, 1890mm wide and 1485mm high on a 2895mm wheelbase, the Mazda 6e is 56mm longer, 50mm wider and 5mm taller than the old Mazda 6 sedan on a 65mm longer wheelbase.
It may be the first Mazda built and engineered in China to be sold in Australia, but it will soon be followed by the Mazda CX-6e.
The CX-6e mid-sized electric SUV also shares its platform with Changan brand Deepal vehicles and is expected to arrive here later this year.
It also has a 190kW/290Nm rear-mounted electric motor and a 78kWh battery, although the range drops to 483km due to the more upright – although still slim – SUV body.
The merger of Mazda 6e and CX-6e gives the Japanese brand two direct competitors to the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y. The brand does not currently offer electric vehicles in Australia after discontinuing the disappointing MX-30 small SUV in 2023.
