An upgrade BYD Shark 6 The double cab model with a 3.5 tonne braked trailer and a plug-in hybrid powertrain with more power is about to be launched in Australia.
The more powerful plug-in hybrid (PHEV) ute is now included in the Australian government’s certification documents, suggesting a local launch is not far away – although the timing has yet to be confirmed.

The more powerful Shark 6 features a 180kW 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with 200kW front and 150kW rear electric motors, for a total system output of 345kW.
In contrast, the current Shark 6 has a 135kW 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and 170kW and 150kW electric motors, for a total output of 321kW.
While the total output of the system only increases to 24 kW, the braked trailer load increases from 2,500 kg to 3,500 kg.
Curb weight has increased slightly, from 2,675kg to 2,738kg, while the Shark 6 2.0T also features larger front brakes.
The new 2.0T powertrain will only be offered with the Crew Cab pickup body and not with the new Crew Cab/Chassis style, scheduled to launch in the first half of 2026.
No cosmetic differences are apparent in the exterior images released in the documents, although they appear to be placeholder images and are identical to the existing Shark 6.
Although the Shark 6 came onto the market just a few months before its competitors Ford Ranger PHEV and GWM Cannon Alpha PHEV, it has so far outperformed them in the sales race.
BYD delivered 18,073 examples last year, compared to 1,371 Cannon Alpha PHEVs and 1,143 Ranger PHEVs. And this despite the fact that BYD only has one variant of the Shark 6.
It remains to be seen how many additional customers BYD can attract this year with the introduction of the cab/chassis and the more powerful 2.0T variant.
